Wainwright’s coast to coast with MJ Forster

lake-district-2009-ulddaCollectors and friends of MJ Forster’s contemporary watercolours ought to follow the wonderful series presented by Julia Bradbury charting Alfred Wainwright’s coast to coast walk; taking in the picturesque climbs of Cumbria, Lake District, Yorkshire Dales and the North Yorkshire Moors.  The programme, currently being aired on BBC2 on Tuesday evenings at 10pm, retraces the famous Lancastrian’s journey of 192 miles, from the west to the east coast of England.

Many of the stunning landscapes were reminiscent of MJ Forster’s watercolours including scenes of Lake District, Northumberland, Silver Birch and the Yorkshire Dales. The Lakes scenes in particular evoke the triumphant feeling of a fell walk, put succinctly by the artist:

‘For me this painting is about a journey it is the promise of a day’s walk in the hills, an early start climbing out through a valley to the high fells beyond. It has a suggestion of the early morning sun glistening on the dew.  The walker has a spring in their step, and a landscape that can be privately enjoyed and discovered.  It is about leaving the steep valley floor with its restricted views, and moving on and up to more elevated peaks.’
