This original landscape painting describes a clear winter’s day, and the pleasure of returning indoors after the exhilaration of being in the crisp fresh fallen snow Unusually I have used the unnatural telegraph poles as a key feature. Possibly I see them as much a part of landscape as trees and hedges.  I also wanted to focus on the homestead, the country cottage, and use the historic scene of the gable end of a farm house to great effect.  As with all Überpainting, the work treads a fine line between representation and a heightened essence of a place.  So in this sense this painting takes the literal Über meaning over and is over-painted: it is over the top. It is what we want to see after a long walk on a cold winter’s day; it’s the comfort and security of the home,  the happy return. The telegraph poles appear like beacons, guiding the walker home and the viewer into the painting.

Snow scenes are great fun to paint as the white of the paper is the predominant colour. So I have had to use the shadow’s very carefully in order to portray the subjects within the landscape paintings. For another example of this use of shadow within a snow scene click here.
