There are so many mental images I carry of the Lake District. I think I imagine this to be deep into Borrowdale. The scene is set in the early morning, the steep valley is contrasted with the promise of open views ahead. The palette is well restrained in this work, I kept it cool greens and blues, what I really would have liked is to create the effect of a dew or even an early morning frost. This is something I'll look at into 2012, I thinks it's achievable in watercolour.
It's a very different scene to the Highlands painting and not just a matter of scale; the lake District is a more cultivated; more inhabited landscape. For me this painting is about a journey it is the promise of a day’s walk in the hills. With an early start climbing out through a valley to the high fells beyond.
I have revisited this painting many times in the past 2 years. To see a different version of this watercolour painting click here.
